What was sex ed like when you were in school? Was it puberty education, delivered brusquely by an uncomfortable school nurse to a class of even-more-uncomfortable preteens? Was it awkward sex-basics, served up via educational video to a darkened room of giggling sophomores? Was it simply basic biology, or did your teacher get into more specifics on birth control and STDs? Whatever your memory of sex ed is, it’s almost certainly very different from what MA schools teach in 2023.
Today, a majority of MA schools employ Comprehensive Sexuality Education, commonly referred to as CSE. CSE is a specific type of graphic sex education written upon the premise that children are sexual from birth and that they have the right to sexual pleasure. CSE normalizes sexual activity and high-risk sexual behaviors for minors. CSE starts young (sometimes as early as preschool) and goes far beyond what most parents think of as puberty education or human reproduction.
Many parents are shocked to learn that topics like masturbation, anal sex, gender identity, sexual pleasure and more are commonly covered in CSE curricula. And sometimes, they learn the truth too late. They find out about the lessons AFTER their children have already learned them. They didn’t approve of these sensitive topics being taught, but they didn’t opt their children out because they had no idea these topics would be included.
So how can MA parents know what their kids might be exposed to under the auspices of health class, sex ed, or puberty education? One easy way is, check the map!
Massachusetts Family Institute offers an interactive Sex Ed Map on their website. Click HERE and then scroll down to the map (pictured below). If your city/town is pink or red, your district report is available.
Click on your city/town to read or download a report of what sex ed curricula are being utilized in your district. These reports are created with information obtained through FOIA requests, submitted by MFI staff and concerned citizens. Once received, the information provided by the district is analyzed to see if it contains the following harmful elements:
Sexualizes children
Promotes diverse sexualities
Promotes transgenderism
Promotes abortion
Undermines parents or parental rights
The map is a work in progress, and new reports are being uploaded every week. Click below to find out if your district is on the map.
It’s hard to protect your kids in today’s world, and it’s even harder to protect them from things you don’t see coming. Knowledge is power. Check out the map to learn more about CSE in your school, and share this post with your friends so they can protect their kids, too.
After you check the map, here’s what to do next:
Learn about your rights. Under MA state law, you have the right to opt your child out of sex ed lessons. For more information read “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Responding to Graphic Sex Education and LGBTQ Content in Massachusetts Public Schools.” This info sheet is also available in Spanish.
Opt your kids out of sex ed. For sample Opt-Out letters in English and Spanish, click HERE.
Learn more about CSE. Our Recommended Resources List contains multiple links where you can find out more about why CSE is harmful to youth.
